I am looking to see if there is a way to install 2 portals on one forum. I essentially want to do something like:
aion.destinysbane.com
wow.destinysbane.com
both of which have their own portal, but is connected to
forums.destinysbane.com
Anyone have any directions or tips on how to get this done?

I have three installs of the phpbb/portal running on my site very much the same as your looking for, but they don't share the same forum. That would be strictly a phpbb thing and have nothing to do with the portal.
you would basically make two subdirectory's on your web host. aion and wow
install phpbb and portal to both of those (but the sql info would need to be in the same DB with a different prefix)
setup the aion.destinysbane.com and wow.destinysbane.com to use the sub directories
then you would need to modify one of the phpbb installs to point at the forum for the other, there are ways to share parts of one install with the other,but you would need to ask over at phpbb.com
as an example: i have 3 installs they all share the same members list and login session info etc. so my users don't have to login more then once or create accounts with ever site i have that relate's to gaming.

tried what you suggested but that was for phpbb2 and there is very little help with doing it for 3. it worked sorta, but there were permissions issues and it seems like trying to sort out the permissions issues was kinda a pain. opted to suck it up and just keep 2 independent forums.

I just re did my site's, i can give you some pointers on doing it. As mine works fine now. I have fixed the permission issues also. Avatars work between both sites, users are shared as is the session management.
you have to have sql access to fix the permission issues. you have to edit the table's in your primary phpbb db.
